Otago claimed a thrilling 43-38 victory over Waikato in front of an energetic Dunedin crowd on Saturday afternoon.
The Hilux NPC clash showcased the best of provincial rugby. Fans were treated to an entertaining contest featuring 12 tries, momentum swings throughout, and a dramatic finish that kept spectators on the edge of their seats.
Otago struck first through winger Jona Nareki before Waikato responded with a series of clinical attacking raids. The visitors briefly held the advantage in a first half that produced eight tries and a remarkable 54 points, with Waikato taking a narrow 28-26 lead into the break.
The home side responded strongly in the second spell. Otago’s forwards laid the platform, while the backs capitalised on opportunities in space. Tries to Ben Lopas and Sam Nemec-Vial proved crucial as the hosts edged ahead during a high-tempo second half.
